A tanker carrying unleaded gasoline exploded early this morning, causing 250 yards of roadway to collapse near Emeryville. The driver walked away from the incident and took a taxi to a nearby hospital where he is being treated for second-degree burns, according to the California Highway Patrol. The accident destroyed a section of freeway near the heart of the Macarthur Maze, where four freeways intersect, about a mile from the Bay Bridge toll entrance. Traffic will have to be diverted for weeks.

The good news is that some routes to the Bay Bridge will be re-opened.
