Despite the gloomy near-term prospects for the economy, one glimmer of hope is that
venture capital investments in U.S. startups climbed to a six-year high of $29.4 billion in 2007. Some of the smartest investors on the planet are not pulling back but opening their wallets. The next Apple, Genentech, or Google could be gestating a few miles away.
